  1. beastie boys:
Ahh, the Beastie Boys. I've loved their singles for a while, even though I really only got into their music after a lot of it was made. Still, though, their albums are musical TNT. My favorite song used to be "Whatcha Want" but now it's like an 8-way tie.
  2. clerks:
Clerks. The quintessential Kevin Smith movie, it has a ridiculous amount of cursing but perfectly captures the malaise that accompanies the run of the mill day job. It's probably because of Clerks that the desire to Do Something With My Life runs so strong.
  3. daft punk:
Daft Punk, another "listen to the whole album" band. I got into this wonderful French group a while back, when their album Homework was new, based on the amazingly groovable "Da Funk" single. Then a few years went by and they released the album Discovery, with full support from Leji Matsumoto, and they hit it super-big in the mainstream, iPod commercials and all. And they're still doing the same groove. When the next album comes out, I'll buy it first chance I get.
  4. final fantasy vi:
IF YOU HAVE NEVER PLAYED THIS GAME DO NOT ATTEMPT TO GET INTO A CONVERSATION WITH ME ABOUT CONSOLE RPGS! Okay, so it's probably not as fun as Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger, or Earthbound, but it has a large cast of characters that are more real than others, all done in a game that has a perfect execution of Theme and Pacing. Plus it's steampunk. Who doesn't love steampunk?
  5. jay & silent bob:
See #2: Note that if you have a dead-end miserable job you deserve to have people making fun of you. In my opinion, nobody makes fun of anybody better than these two, partially because when they do it they make fun of themselves at the same time. They're court jesters for everyday life, modern Falstaffs better than even Falstaff was.
  6. neon genesis evangelion:
I don't know if this single-handedly changed anime. I know that it single-handedly changed the way that anime was made, simply because the incentive to finish a series in order to satisfy the audience is now "do it or there's rioting in the streets." Oh yeah, and it's also philosophically one of the richest TV series pretty much ever.
  7. post-modernism:
I hate it and I love it. It goes against the cold harshness of modernism and eclecticly and haphazardly tries to make things super-authentic by pushing a lot of crap together at once. Personally, I think it's mostly over, but I can't deny that it was huge when it was here.
  8. secret of mana:
Okay, see the thing on Final Fantasy VI. This is how to make an RPG where you don't care about the characters at all but it's so much fun that playing it over and over again is the most fun you've ever had. It has 3-player mode. The music is the most likable of anything on the SNES. The graphics are cheery and fun. The game system makes walking around and leveling up fun.
  9. the beatles:
You cannot disagree with me that the Beatles are the greatest rock band that has ever or will ever exist. Sure, theoretically there may be some band in 50 years that makes some new kind of music loved by so many people that wherever they go they are bombarded by pre-teens at the same time they're getting top reviews and making an average of 12 full albums and four movies in seven years (and 39 singles, charting on average #12 but including 27 in the top 10). But I seriously doubt it; how'd the Beatles do all of this? They stopped putting out two albums a year just before they stopped touring altogether, and even then one year they did a double-album. Also, on a different tangent, I think it's my love of the Beatles that completely prevents me from loving Pink Floyd.
  10. waffle house:
Waffle House serves real food to real people. It's a chain diner among a land of nothing but fast food and $10 entree bar-and-grills. It's open all day every day--I ate there on Christmas day even. It's better than IHOP and Denny's because it offers a selection of real food that has real names; at Waffle House you can have your hashbrowns Covered (with cheese), but you won't find a Rooty Tooty Fresh & Fruity or Moons Over My-Hammie. After all, when you're hungry late at night you want some grub, not a joke for children.
